CHAPTER SEVEN

JARROD kissed Molly before he could stop himself. To offer comfort. To push the confusion from her eyes.

Because he needed to.

He didn’t understand that last part, but it was there inside him and wouldn’t leave. As she lifted up to meet his touch, he experienced the oddest sensations of reassurance and welcome, security and home-coming.

These were thoughts a man would have if he’d wanted all the things Jarrod Banning had never wanted, didn’t believe he was capable of. He’d warned Molly of as much, yet here they were.

He couldn’t let go, and so he pushed aside the concerns and focused on the feel of her, the response of her lips beneath his as he took the kiss deeper. For her. For her comfort. Wasn’t that enough?

If his heart seemed to fill with inexplicable warmth and give the lie to his justifications, in this moment he didn’t care.

‘Jarrod.’ She whispered his name. Her hand fisted in the front of his shirt. The need on her face spoke for her.

He kissed her again then, a probing, hungry kiss that had little to do with finesse or style or experience, and everything to do with kissing her the only way he seemed able—with all of his senses, determination and attention.

It was more than he had given before, yet in that thought was the knowledge that this was far from enough for her.

Molly blinked as he drew back. ‘I don’t understand why you did that. You made it clear you didn’t want—’

Yes. He had. Yet his gaze was on her face—on the soft, flushed skin.

She was so receptive. Completely responsive.

And this is totally not happening again, so forget it.

He cleared his throat. ‘Perhaps for comfort. Yours and maybe mine, just a little. It has been…a rough day.’

She nodded and swallowed, and her chin came up. ‘I wanted to comfort you. In a businesslike sense of the word. As your coworker and…friend.’

He could feel her constraint, her effort to draw back from him emotionally. He had to let her do that. ‘I should take you back. Next week there’ll be a further round of social engagements. I’d like you to do some fresh information gathering as well, on associated topics that will help with our continued onslaught towards new custom for the business.’

‘I can do that.’ She nodded.

He got to his feet, led the way off the deck, and Horse came gambolling over to them.

As her pet approached, Molly drew a deep breath and faced her boss. Yes, her boss. ‘What’s the next external event on the calendar?’ She could do this, focus on the work.

‘There’s a live theatre-production in the middle of the week, and a dinner on Thursday night.’ He glanced away from her. ‘Then there’s a treasure hunt at the weekend.’

‘How does a treasure hunt help us promote business?’ The other two things seemed very ordinary. She imagined them trotting around Brisbane’s CBD with mobile phones, following a trail of clues—that didn’t.

‘The organiser is one of our existing clients. He phoned me at home, asked me to sign up for the event.
